In January 2019 I was commissioned by IKEA to create a series of portraits as part of the launch of a new store in Greenwich North. To illustrate the sustainability and green credentials of the store the team invited me to make portraits from the pages of old IKEA catalogues.
I started out by creatiing some very detailed portraits of Greenwich celebrities - past and present. So you can see images of Boy George (local lad), Queen Elizabeth I (born at Greenwich Palace) Admiral Nelson (based at Admiralty, Greenwich) and John Flamsteed (the first Astronomer). And then I set up my studio at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery within the University of Greenwich and created swift, very direct portraits of local people using only the pages of IKEA catalogues.
The show of portraits is on show at the Gallery until 7th February when they'll be set up as a gallery at the new store near the O2 as part of the launch events. I'll be there doing 'live portraits' in the store on that day. Super exciting!
If you are interested in commissioning a portrait like this please do get in touch.
Here are a few images from the project: Greenwich 'celebs' - Queen Elizabeth I, Boy George, Flamsteed and Lord Nelson. Check out a film of the making of the portrait of Queen Elizabeth and Horation Nelson.
